Sunday Games: Unfair, Unfair Expansion: Alien B-movie Dinosaur Western, & Century: Golem Edition
Sunday Night feat. Pizza and Board games.
Tonight, being our first 'official' game play in our challenge, we were able to cross three items off our list which are recapped below.
Game: Unfair & Unfair Expansion: Alien B-movie Dinosaur Western
Unfair is a game for 2-5 players where you build a theme park, published by Good Games Publishing, out of Sydney, Australia.
This is our second time playing Unfair together and we incorporated two decks from the expansion set: Dinosaurs (Danny), and Western (MB). The Dinosaur deck introduced dice rolls which was new for us.
We were pretty tired tonight and started a bit late which is not ideal for board games! One of the few downsides to this game is that set-up is a bit complicated and pack down is a bit long as you have to assemble and reassemble the decks. The flip-side of this is that every game can play out really differently which is cool.
Danny:
Overall thoughts: A fun game - but quite punishing. Next time I would try another one of the decks I haven't played with yet.
Best moment: None.
Worst moment: Losing my T-Rex when it got demolished by an 'Unfair' card midway through the game.
Score: 7
MB:
Overall thoughts: A really fun game - although I do find it a bit confusing at times espiecally when tired - perhaps we could try play it during the day next time. Next time I am quite keen to play the B-Movie deck.
Best moment: I picked up a great Blueprint card right at the end of the game that netted me an extra 38 extra points.
Worst moment: None, I won.
Score: A solid 7
Overall we really like this game and would really like to play it with a couple more people too as that dynamic would be interesting. We haven't really used any of the 'mean' event options so far where you can target/punish the other players and we probably need to push ourselves to do this in the future.
The pack down and set up are a lot more complicated than we like (you combine parts of each deck at the beginning and seperate them again at the end) which is fine, just takes a little time. The board itself for layout is really good - MB is a fan.
The best part about this game is that there are so many little things in deck variation, luck, and game events - that there are thousands of ways the game could go. This combined with the playtime (which they estimate as about 25 minutes per player which is about right for us) means the game is a great option for a quick, fun, game with lots of strategy options.
Game: Century: Golem Edition
It was almost 10pm by the time we started playing this one, but this is a game we have played a few times before. Century: Golem Edition is published by Plan B Games and sees 2-5 players competing in the gem trade against one another.
Danny:
Overall thoughts: A good game, play time is nice and quick, although it does take a bit of thought. A lot of this game really does come down to luck, although next time I might try and buy Golems sooner and not build up market cards as much.
Best moment: Converting lots of blue gems for lots of pink gems twice, which was a very satisfying trade. Also that the game packs up so easily (especially is contrast to Unfair).
Worst moment: being pipped at buying golems a couple of times
Score: 8
MB:
Overall thoughts: Such a fun game, we have played this one heaps of times before and no doubt will play it heaps more. It feels a little similar to Splendour, which is another favourite of ours. I really like the little gems - they are produced really nicely and are a high quality. Not a fan of the white bowls they come in though. My strategy is to build up Golems as quickly as possible and I probably would play exactly the same next time (even though I lost). I think I prefer playing this game with four people as it makes it harder to figure out everyones game play.
Best moment: Getting free gems when buying the rejects in the market - I got a few which had 4+ gems on them which was a good score.
Worst moment: Losing! The winner is determined by adding up your Golem points at the end and every time I feel like I won until we could and Danny has actually beaten me by oodles.
Score: 7.5
So with that we packed up and went to bed. 3/165 played... just 162 to go! 😅
